How to remove Antivirus XP 2008

After ten years of being on the ‘net almost 24/7, I acted like a n00b and infected myself with a computer virus.

I’m not 100% certain of the steps immediately before I got the virus/malware, but one did include hitting ‘unblock’ on a svchost process pop-up. I think the pop-up was actually fake and launched the downloader for the Antivirus XP 2008. My computer restarted immediately without warning, and this new happy program was letting me know that I had millions of infections on my computer, and my background picture was changed to a fake warning.

If you tell the Antivirus XP 2008 program to scan and delete, it will tell you that you need to buy the full version for $99. How quaint.

Instead of doing that, click this link and download Anti-Malware from Malwarebytes. Run a full scan, then remove the stupid program. Anti-malware will return your system to normal. I now swear by Adaware and Anti-malware, although hopefully I won’t click on a fake pop-up :P

Adaware is great. You should also download Spybot Search & Destroy, Ewido, and Advanced Windows Care V2. SS&D has by far cleaned the most infections that others usually doesn’t find.
