WeHaveIssues.net ( WHI ) was a short lived, semi-popular satire e-zine that I created in April of 2002. At one time, we had a few thousand visitors per day, an active forum community, and a staff of 6-7 editors contributing articles. WHI suffered from what I like to call, Crazy Dev Syndrome ( CDS ). I was constantly rewriting the backend as I learned new programming tricks, and the site was in a half finished state for it’s entire life.
WHI was written in PHP, running on a MySQL backend, on Square-Network hosting. We started out at another host, but was dropped after a few controversial articles, and was ripped off by ColaHost ( who later shut down ) at the beginning of 2003 after only two months of service. WHI was always, contrary to popular belief, hosted on shared hosting without a problem. We employed one of the first builds of Invision Power Board after Matt Mecham broke off from Javis and started IPS, after dumping phpBB in a expletive laced rant after being hacked three times in a row.
Weirdly enough, I got a job at IPS years later, working with the guy who I learned a lot of PHP tricks from by looking at his forum code.
The Drama
Even though WHI was trying to bust out as an anti-drama, pro-old internet community, we did succumb to some hilarious drama stories, including a falsifying editor, a rival site that hated our guts because we used grey colors, and a crazy lady from Pennsylvania that flew out and became obsessed with our managing editor, Steve. Maybe I’ll elaborate on those stories one of these days
What’s Left
All that is left of WHI currently is some Archive.org pages, and the domain. I let the domain go this year. Yeah I know, it’s sad, but now I have an extra $8 a year
